Deep Sea Sampling on Air

The «Interview of the week» is a well known feature of the MDR Radio Broadcast. On July 27th Prof. Martin Sobczyk could speak about the risks and opportunities of deep sea mining - and how the research at TU Bergakademie Freiberg and within the Deep Sea Sampling Project can contribute to improve knowledge about possible mining efforts in Massive Seabed Sulfides.

During the 15 minute interview, Prof. Dr. Martin Sobczyk was discussing issues regarding the challenges of deep sea mining, the regulatory framework, and opportunities for research and development in related fields of science and engineering. While the harvesting of polymetallic nodules is currently widely discussed, massive sulfides bear interesting amounts of copper, zinc and other elements necessary for the energy transition. While they will not fully solve all supply shortcomes, their mining can contribute substantially to support the need of especially copper.
