MiningReport's first issue in 2024 contains or 10-pager on Sensor Data Fusion for Navigation Systems for the Extraction of Raw Materials in the Deep Sea, which is online available for subscibers on Mining Reports homepage. Based on an outlook on the special requirements for in Deep Sea Sampling (2.500 m depth, no natural light, 2°C ambient temperature) a basic concept of an inertial measurement unit (IMU) is developed and the mathematical fundamentals are discussed. Emphasis is layed on geo references, utilized sensors like microelectro-mechanical systems (MEMS) and gyros and the positioning support methods to cirumvent drift and noise issues. Fosus is than layed on filters, especially Kalman filter, to fuse sensor data inside the unit into an operatable signal.
